Internal Flashcards
When does a precipitation reaction occur
A precipitation reaction occurs when two aqueous solutions (which means ionic compounds dissolved in water)combine to make an insoluble product (a precipitate) and a soluble product
Write down the precipitate reaction
Rule:
Ion A+ + Ion B- = precipitate AB
Refer to solubility rules
In a precipitation reaction
Example of precipitation reaction (equation)
AB + CD - AD + CB
Ionic equation example precipitation
Pb+2 + 2CI- = PbCl2
Checklist for precipitation reaction
-define what a precipitation reaction is - what are two solutions you mixed -what were the observations -what is the precipitate going to be -explain how you picked the precipitate, refer to specific solubility rules -name the other product and say why it is not precipitate, refer to solubility rules - write the ionic equation
When does a displacement reaction occur
A displacement reaction occurs when a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its compound
Write an equation for displacement reaction
AB + C = BC + A
Write an example for an ionic equation for a displacement reaction
Mg(s) + Cu+2 - Cu (s) +Mg+2
Checklist for displacement reaction
- define what a displacement reaction is
- State which metal is most reactive and which metal is least reactive. Refer to the activity series
- what displaces what? Why? Refer to the activity series
- what were the observations
- what was the spectator ion
- Right the ionic equation for the reaction
When does a combination reaction occur
A combination reaction occurs when two reactants combined to make a single product that is more stable
Write an equation for a combination reaction
A + B =AB
Explain how combination reaction works
Atoms of different elements will react with each other if the new substance formed is more stable than the two original substances. They will do this by either sharing electrons and forming a can covalent bond or donating/excepting electrons and forming an ionic bond. Sometimes energy, heat is needed to start the reaction
Checklist combination reaction
- define what a combination reaction is
- what were the reactants
- what was the product
- what were the observations
- link the observation to the product
- Give word and symbol equations
When does thermal decomposition occur
Thermal decomposition reactions involve breaking one compound into two or more simpler compounds using heat. We will decompose dry carbonate powders in the lab by hitting them in a test tube of a flame. Sometimes the powder will change colour, but not always
