Interlocking Spurs And Flooding Flashcards
How does flooding occur?
It occurs when a river has too much water in its channel and it spills onto the surrounding land.
Physical causes of flooding?
Heavy rainfall and snowmelt
Human factors increasing flood risk?
Towns and cities have surfaces like tarmac and concrete. These surfaces don’t allow water to pass through them and therefore take water quickly to drains and therefore water is returned to rivers too quickly
6 stages of a river flooding
- heavy rain falls
- rain soaks into ground
- water runs over surface
- water quickly reaches river
- river level rise
- river floods
What is deforestation?
Cutting down trees for flooding
What is urbanisation?
Buildings and roads
What is a interlocking spur?
When a river meets areas of harder rock that are difficult to erode it winds around them.A series of hills form on either said of the river called Spurs. As the river flows around these hill the become interlocked
Negative effects of flooding
- Homes are flooded-furniture can be destroyed, costing money
- farm animals may drawn
- crops can be destroyed
- sewage systems may overflow
- travel and transport can be dismpted as roads are under water
Positive effects of flooding
- flood waters bring mudlminerals (known as slit) from the river onto the floodplain beside and that makes the soil fertile for farming
- flooding can flush out pollution
Give one way a flood can be prevented
Planting trees in the river basin. The trees act as a break on rainfall and reduce an amount of rain reaching the ground.
