Interleukins Flashcards
IL-1 (6 main points)
Produced by macrophages Pro-inflammatory (systemic inflammatory process) Endogenous pyrogens Acts on hypothalamus Induces Fever Increased expression of ICAMS
IL-2 (2 main points)
Product of helper T-cells
Autocrine/Paracrine Fxn
IL-3
Myeloid cell hematopoietic colony stimulation factor in the bone marrow (APC)
IL-4 (3 main points)
Secreted by TH2 cells
Stimulates B and T cell proliferation
Promotes class switching to IgE by plasma cells
IL-5 (3 main points)
Produced by TH2 and mast cells
Causes isotype switching to IgA
Activates Eosinophils
IL-6 (4 main points)
Secreted by T cells and Macrophages
Pro-inflammatory cytokines
Second endogenous pyrogen- stimulates hepatocytes to release acute phase reactants
Acts on myeloid stem cells differentiation in the bone marrow
IL-7
Strong hematopoietic growth factor of lymphoid cells in the bone marrow (produced by bone marrow, and thymic stromal cells - growth factor for T and B cell precursors)
IL-8 (3 main points)
Produced by macrophages, endo- and epithelial cells (call cells containing TLRs)
Powerful chemotactic factor for neutrophils - CHEMOTAXIS
Induction of endothelial adherence and extravasation
IL-10 (5 main points)
Produced by TH2 cells Anti-Inflammatory Cytokine Suppresses macrophages and TH1 cytokine production (IL-2, IL-3, TNFa, IFNy) Blocks NF-kB transcription factor Decreases CD4+ T cell activation
IL-11
Differentiation of megakaryocytes into platelets
IL-12 (2 main points)
Produced by APCs
Stimulates differentiation of naive T cells into TH1 cells
Stimulates T cells to secrete IFNy and TNFa
IFN-y production by NK cells
IL-15 (2 main points)
Secreted by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells in response to viral infections
Stimulates NK cell proliferation
IL-21
Secreted by activated CD4+ cells stimulates NK and CD8+ cells
IL-18
IFN-y synthesis
