The prayer hool is the room in the synagogue where Jews come together for communal,worship and prayer
Features of the prayer hall
The Ark
The ever burning light ( ner tamid )
The reading platform ( bimah)
Description of the Ark
The Ark is an ornamental cabinet or container where the Torah scripts are kept.Situated at the front of the synagogue usually set into the wall facing Jerusalem .Usually reached by climbing up some steps.Usually two stone tablets placed above the Ark, on which the start of each of the Ten commandments is written
Description of the ner tamid ( ever burning light )
A light placed in front of and slightly above the Ark
Traditionally an oil lamp , but most synagogues now use electric lights
Description of the bimah
A raised platform situated in most synagogues in the centre of the prsyer hall.Where the Torah is read from during services
Significance of the Ark
Holiest place in the synagogue.
Represents the original Ark of the Covenant.This first Ark was built to hold the stone tablets that contained the Ten commandments which God gave to Moses.By climbing up to steps to reach the Ark , Jews are reminded that God is above hisnpeople and the sacred Torah is above humanity
Significance of ner tamid
Symbolises God’s presence so it is never put out.A reminder of the menorah that was lit every night in the Temple in Jerusalem
Significance of the reading platform ( bimah )
Provides a focal point when the Torah is being read, making it easier for the congregation to see the reader and hear what is being said .To some Jews it is a reminder that the altar was a central feature of the courtyard in the Temple in Jerusalem
