Interim 3 Rules Flashcards
What areas are designated permitted working in ABS?
Shunting yards
Sidings
Station limits
Details in table A - sectional appendix
What does clearance of a shunting signal authorise a driver to do?
Proceed at extreme caution.
Expect line to be obstructed.
Travel only as far as required or next stop signal.
Travel at speed you can stop in distance you can see line is clear.
What is a repeater signal and how identified?
Repeater cannot display a red aspect but relates to a signal that can.
Identified by ‘R’ or ‘RR’ before the red signal.
Define bi-directional line
A line where signalling provided in both directions with no priority of direction.
Define reversible line and max speed.
A line where the normal flow of traffic has priority and the reversible is used occasionally in degraded situations.
Max speed 85mph
You see both lights out on a limit of shunt indicator applicable to your line - what must you do?
Stop
Report to signaller immediately
Complete RT3185
Only 3 light illuminated in junction indicator
Stop at convenient opportunity.
Report to signaller.
Complete RT3185 before booking off.
How do you identify an electric token?
Colour coded.
Section of route it relates to is stamped on it.
What is the authority to enter single line worked by electric token?
Token and Signal
Under what circs may driver enter a single line without possession of token?
PALMS
Pilotman Working
Assisting a failed train
Line under possession
MWA
Shunting past section signal with authority
Rules for receipt, conveyance and delivery of token.
Stop the train.
Ensure correct token received.
Carry token in driving cab.
Surrender token at end of single line.
Why would a pilotman be introduced in single lines?
Token is Lost
Obstruction - to/from
Signal cannot be cleared because:
Disconnection or failure
Equipment failure, TC or signalling
Level Crossing failure
Token machine failure
What does OTDR stand for?
What is it’s purpose?
On Train Data Recorder.
Able to check driver standards.
Assist in investigations by recording status of inputs i.e. speed, distance, time, CPBC positions, WSP, Horn, Doors and AWS.
TPWS meaning and purpose
Train Protection and Warning System.
Triggers emergency brake application if:
Train too fast approaching Red, buffer stop or speed restriction.
AWS not reset.
Signal passed at danger.
TPWS grids found where?
Approach to and at some signals.
Approach to buffers and PSRs.
Describe how TPWS protect signals.
Arming loop and trigger loop positioned on approach to a signal - Overspeed sensors.
Another pair at the signal with no gap - Train stop sensors.
AWS and it’s purpose.
Works alongside TPWS and ensures driver is alert.
Applies emergency brake should AWS not be reset when required at:
Cautionary signals
Some PSRs
AOCLs
Eros & Tros
Permitted max speed if AWS/TPWS isolated.
40mph.
Linespeed if competent person available. 40mph during fog or snowing.
Situations where DRA must be used.
Stopped at Red/stop board.
Entering a platform authorised by Shunt disk, Subsidiary or GPL.
Entering platform after a single yellow.
After passing a signal at danger.
Before leaving the cab.
Relieving or being relieved.
If equipment defective on your train, who must you report this to and what else needs to be done!
Report to Signaller and Maintenance Control.
Complete repair book.
12 items of on-train equipment that must be reported immediately if defective.
AWS Cab window broken Dragging brakes DSD DVD EBS Fire Detection Head/Tail lights Horn - complete loss. Hot axle box Interlock switch Lifeguards Radio Sander Speedo TPWS TCA WSP if slippery.
What are your actions if TCA isolated?
Inform signaller if isolated TCA on first or last vehicle.
Approach with caution Auto crossings and barrow/foot crossings with white lights. Only cross if safe to do so and sound horn until on crossing.
Applicable speeds for defective headlight.
Switch to other headlight - normal
Total failure - 20mph. Sound horn frequently.
Portable headlight fitted - 75mph
What actions if complete failure of tail lights?
Inform signaller.
Do not move.
Arrange portable hand lamp showing red to rear of train.
If Hot Axle Box activated, what sequence of events occur?
Signaller brings train to a stand.
Signaller informs driver which axle activated the detector and on which side.
Driver examines axle box.
Driver reports back to signaller.
20mph if cannot examine within 10mins.
Speed if a second Hot Axle Box detector is activated.
20mph max
If there is evidence of a Hot Axle Box and doubt over the movement being made safely, at what speed must train be driven?
10mph max.
5mph over points and crossings.
What are the instructions if Speedo fails in service?
Report immediately to signaller.
Do not move unless instructed.
Control train at speed you know will not breach any restrictions.
Complete the repair book.
Risks of starting a train with ‘NOT TO BE MOVED’ board attached.
Death or injury to persons working on or near the train.
Damage to rolling stock and infrastructure.
Collision.
Max speed if serious flats less than 60mm?
20 mph
What are instructions for partial horn failure?
Inform control at first available opportunity and follow instructions.
What are instructions if complete failure of horn?
Stop and contact signaller immediately.
Do not move train unless authorised.
Follow instructions.
20mph max.
Track workers on line. What do you do?
High/low horn.
Observe response.
If they fail to move: High/low again. Short blasts. Emergency brake. Signaller.
