Interference Theory Flashcards
How can the evidence of interference effects in everyday situations be a strength? + counter
Baddeley and HItch
-Rugby player recall teams played against.
-Players who played the most games had poorest recall
-forg in everyday sit =uations is unusual, two memories have to be fairly similar which happens but not often e.g similar subjects
What is a limitation of interference theory in explaining forgetting?
-Inference is temporary and can be overcome by cues
-Tulving and Polska
list of words in categories, one list at a time told to recall (not told categories), recall 70% but became worse (proactive interference)
-Later given categories (cues) recall rose again to 70%
-Memory didnt dissapear permenantly
What is a limitation of the interfernce theory in terms of validity?
Most studies testing this are lab studies, controlled variables
-But use artificial materials
-irl we may learn something and recall it much later, not immediately like lab studies
