institutionalized cooperation between interest groups and the state in the formulation of policies

- integrated in a set of institutional arrangements
- centralized and concentrated in peak associations
- willing to compromise
why has corporatism weakened in europe?
- globalization- undermined national level policymaking
- post industrial society- increasing fragmentation of production into smaller and smaller factories doesn’t favour peak associations
- ideological repositioning- eastern european countries oppose corporatism bc it’s asocited with the power of trade unions
what is pluralism?
a competition between interest groups for influence on public policies in which the state plays a neutral role
what is pluralism based on?
competition - not cooperation (doesn’t work on an institutionalized set of negotiations)
intererst groups under pluralism are….
- dispersed accross different institutional arenas
- fragmented into a number of groups
- in competition with each other
