What is Culture?
A code of attitudes and values. It determines how we see ourselves and the world. Culture is not right or wrong.
What does ethnocentric mean?
You see your own culture as the point of reference
Which stages are ethnocentric?
Denial, Defense, Minimization
What does ethno-relative mean?
You are able to place your own culture within the context of other cultures
Which stages are ethno-relative?
Acceptance, Adaption, Integration
What are the stages of Intercultural Sensitivity?
Denial Defense Minimization Acceptance Adaption Integration
Denial Stage
= We think all cultures are the same and we only recognize observable cultural differences like food
Defense Stage
= We are aware of cultural differences but in a dualistic us vs them way
Minimization Stage
= Mainly aware of superficial cultural differences. Ones own values and norms are seen as universal, we judge people based on our own norms and values.
Acceptance Stage
= We are able to recognize and accept cultural differences in values and behaviour, cultural difference is seen as a source of new ideas and solutions to problems
Adaption Stage
= We are able to evaluate another culture from the frame of reference of the other culture. We are able to act within the norms of that other culture
Integration Stage
= We are able to practice multiple frames of reference
