Interactionist treatment and explanations Flashcards
Who found that those with a genetic vunerability combined with an external stressor were more likely to develop schizophrenia providing support for the diathesis stress model

Who found that interactionist treatments are more effective than drug therapies or psychological therapies alone
Hogarty
Diathesis stress model
-The main interactionist approach for schizophrenia is the diathesis stress model which suggests that a combonation of abnormal biological processes create a predisposition to the disorder but that external, psychological stress trigger the onset/actualisation of the predisposition causing the disorder.
Limitations
-Cannot explain the mechanisms behind how schizophrenia forms-it cannot explain how genes interact with environmental experiences to cause the disorder and thus is too simplistic to explain the mechanisms behind schizophrenia-lacks insight-how it triggers a complex disorder
-Contradicted by the biological approach-argues that schizophrenia is entirely the result of biology, not a diathesis stress model, however, genotype doesn’t entirely determine behaviour, phenotype is determined by the environment suggesting it cannot be solely explained in regards to genes and the biological approach doesn’t undermine the interactionist explanation-too reductionist,
Interactionist treatments-
Involve the combined use of biological and psychological therapies
Limitation of interactionist treatments
-More expensive, higher burden on NHS than drug therapies or psychotherapies alone.
