Q

What do researchers do for electic therapy?

A

assess the relative effectiveness of different treatments for schizophrenia by comparing them in terms of cost, relapse rates, degree of side effects, as well as symptom reduction.
-Most research points towards a combined approach, where the patient may be administered anti-psychotic medication to deal with a chemical imbalance in dopamine to treat the positive symptoms (such as delusions) AND a psychological therapy (such as CBT) to treat the negative symptoms (such as avolition).

Q

Why will the best combination of treatment be assessed on a case by case (idiographic) basis?

A

-due to the nature of schizophrenia and the wide variety of differing symptoms
-for each individual patient, the type and severity if symptoms experienced will dictate what course of electic therapy is offered
