Interactionist Approach to TREATING Schizophrenia: Eclectic Therapy Flashcards
What is a therapeutic application of the diathesis-stress model?
electric therapy
What is electic therapy?
-a holistic approach to treating disorders which suggests that combining therapeutic methods is the most effective way to treat the arious contributing factors
What do researchers do for electic therapy?
assess the relative effectiveness of different treatments for schizophrenia by comparing them in terms of cost, relapse rates, degree of side effects, as well as symptom reduction.
-Most research points towards a combined approach, where the patient may be administered anti-psychotic medication to deal with a chemical imbalance in dopamine to treat the positive symptoms (such as delusions) AND a psychological therapy (such as CBT) to treat the negative symptoms (such as avolition).
Why will the best combination of treatment be assessed on a case by case (idiographic) basis?
-due to the nature of schizophrenia and the wide variety of differing symptoms
-for each individual patient, the type and severity if symptoms experienced will dictate what course of electic therapy is offered
What is widely believed about the interactionist approach?
that it predicts the best therapeutic outcomes for each individual patient as what is appropriate for one patient may not be for another
