an act is only deviant when its been labelled and crime is a social construction

agencies of social control use discretion and police has pre existing ideas of the criminal type and criminal behaviour

Institutions such as prisons help labels stick and ‘ex-con’ is applied when they’re released

becker suggests societal reactions and the application of the label produce more deviance than they prevent, known as master status

when labels become our master status, every other label is gone, we are just seen as a criminal
