Cohen Flashcards
What does cohens study explore?
Cohens study explores why working class boys join delinquent subcultures and why they are more likely to commit crime
what does he believe?
Cohen believes that everyone learns the same values and goals through socialisation, part of creating value consensus. Meaning, working class boys have the same life goals as middle class boys
What does he mention?
working class boys are less likely to achieve at school due to cultural deprivation rather than material deprivation
due to having poor attitudes to school and education, they may turn to anti-school subculture or they may try to use shortcuts to try and achieve mainstream success goals.
More Info on what he mention
working class boys may turn to delinquent subcultures because they are not getting the status they are craving
to gain status they turn to mainstream values ‘ on their head’. For example , vandalism is viewed as a positive thing for delinquent subculture
How is he critized?
some mumbers could be socialised into deviant values, rather than just sharing the same values as everybody else.
Another critism is that cohen only focused this on boys and marxists critics argue cohen has ignore the causes of social class inequality
