interactionist approach Flashcards
what is the interactionist approach
acknowledges biological, psychological and social factors which develop Sz
what are societal stressors
substance abuse- cannabis increases Sz risk 7 times
family dysfunction
Academic pressure
what is the diathesis stress model
both vulnerability and stress needed to develop Sz
what is Meehls original model
diathesis entirely genetic
schizogene
no amount of stress= Sz unless u have gene
what is Ripkes modern model
polygenic
trauma is diathesis
childhood trauma=dysfunction of HPA=sensitivity to stress
evaluate interactionist approach
+ Gottesman- concordance more than 1% but less than 100% so shows biological and environmental factors
+ Tarrier- controlled/random allocation- 315 patients- after 18 months of interactionist treatment symptoms reduced… but treatment causation fallacy as only deals with symptoms not cause
+Tiernari- 19000 kids- bio parent has Sz- 36.8% if adopted into dysfunctional family. 5% if adopted into good family. Shows diathesis stress model
+ holistic and nature nurture
Interactionist treatment
Drugs and psychological treatment
~ medication decreases symptoms so CBT can be used to challenge origins
Evidence from Tarrier
