Interactionist Approach Flashcards
Outline the interactionist approach to explain Sz (6 marks)
The interactionist approach suggests that Sz is developed due to a combination of biological and psychological factors - this is known as the diathesis stress model. The original diathesis- stress model was seen as a purely biological down to one “schizo-gene” so having this gene combined with stress in childhood such as a schizophrenogenic mother could lead to schizophrenia. This gave way to a polygenic approach where many genes increase vulnerability to schizophrenia. New understanding of diathesis suggests that diathesis can be genetic OR psychological trauma. It changes the development of the brain leading somebody to being vulnerable to stress. New understanding showed that stress can trigger schizophrenia, not just parenting. E.g. cannabis can increase risk of schizophrenia by up to seven times. However as not everyone who smokes cannabis develops schizophrenia so may be more vulnerability factors.
Outline the interactionist approach to treat Sz (6 marks)
The interactionist approach suggests that Sz is developed due to a combination of biological and psychological factors so we should treat schizophrenia in the same way. A combination of antipsychotic and CBT can be used. In the UK treatments such as CBT, family therapy and drug therapy are usually combined.
