Cognitive Explanation for Sz - Dysfunctional Thought Processing Flashcards
Outline the cognitive explanation for Sz
Cognitive explanation focuses on the role of the internal mental processes. Sz is characterised by a disruption to normal thought processes. One type of dysfunctional thought processing is metarepresentation which is the ability to reflect on thoughts and behaviours. It allows insight into our intentions and interpret actions. Dysfunction in Metarepresentation disrupts our ability to recognise our own thoughts and actions we or others carry out. It could explain auditory hallucinations. Another type of dysfunctional thought processing is central control which is the ability to suppress automatic responses whilst performing deliberate actions. Disorganised speech and thought disorder can come from the inability to supress automatic thoughts and speech triggered by other thoughts. Sz patients experience disrupted spoken sentences as each word triggers associations which can’t be supressed.
