Interactionist approach Flashcards
1
Q
How does the interactionist approach explain sz
A
- biological, psychological and societal factors involved in the development of Sz
- Biological factors include- genetic vulnerability, neurochemical and neurological abnormality
- interactionist assumes processes (biological vulnerability and environmental stressor) interact with each other to cause behaviour
2
Q
How does the diathesis stress model explain sz
A
-people who are biologically vulnerable to developing a mental disorder may be more likely to develop if they are subjected to certain social or environmental stressors
3
Q
concrance rates
A
- concordance rates in twin studies aren’t 100% indiciates that there is some genetic link but other factors may play a role as well
- MZ twins may have the same genetic vulnerability but can be triggered by different stressors.
4
Q
research- Zubin and Spring
A
- a person may be born with a predisposition towards schizophrenia which is then triggered by stress in everyday life
- But if they have a supportive environment and/or good coping skills the illness may not develop
5
Q
AO3- holistic
A
- Identifies that patients have different triggers, genes etc
- Patients can receive different treatments for their SZ which will be more effective
6
Q
AO3- Bentall’s meta analysis (2012
A
shows that stress arising from abuse in childhood increases the risk of developing schizophrenia
