Interactionism Flashcards
What is Interactionism?
believes people have more free will in shaping their social life, how we act, and how we interpret things
What approach does Social Action take? What does it focus on?
on how people ‘interact’ and communicate their meanings to eachother
How does Labelling contribute to this theory?
suggests most individuals (mostly in authority) engage in labelling when interacting with people
How do labels shape people?
Labels socialise people into their identities - both positive and negative.
Its a form of symbolic classification - people are judged and sorted into particular social groups
How does LABELLING affect those in education?
Teachers are most likely to label students behaviour on their race, background, dress etc.
What is Self-Fulfilling Prophecy?
labelled individuals will be encouraged to fulfil their ‘label’
