Patriarchal society is dominated by men that has more power and status.
How is FAMILY a main social institution which influences gender inequality?
- Teaches patriarchal values “Dad is breadwinner”, genderised toys, manners
- Socialising girls to accept servient roles in family
- Limits women toa domestic sphere which makes them rely financially on men
- children stereotyped into gender roles + norms CANALISATION
How is EDUCATION a main social institution
- Gender differences in subjects; STEM for boys, girls unrepresented
- teachers predominately female, higher status teams mostly men
How is EMPLOYMENT a main social institution
- “Glass Ceiling” the invisible systematic barriers preventing women from senior roles
- Gender stereotypes; women less capable of powerful positions
- Lose of opportunities (school)
- Maternity leave
Radical Feminists
Wants to change society itself
inequality is embedded in structure of society
power imbalance in all relationships, institutions
Liberal Feminists
want EQUAL rights for all women
cause is lack of legitimate opportunities
seek to advocate changes in legislation
Marxist Feminists
believe CAPITALISM is partly to blame
see this a source of womens oppression and exploitation
Intersectional Feminisim
advocated for considering ALL women#
