- advanced knowledge withheld from lower streams
- assumed lower streams not interested and interpreted contributions negatively
- m/c = higher streams

Ball (1981)
Banding system in comp school, 3 performance based bands:
- those who fathers had non manual jobs were places in higher bands
- lower bands deteriorated
- lower expectations of lower bands

Children in lower streams labeled trouble makers and developed a non conformist delinquent sub culture

Studied in London schools:
- w/c and blk pupils places in lower sets even if achieved the same
- perceived has having lower ability
- once in lower sets weren’t entered for higher GCSEs
