Inter Relationships Flashcards
(34 cards)
What are drugs
Chemical substances that affect the CNS
What is drug tolerance
Body gets used to it so higher doses are needed to give the same effect
What is a depressant (alcohol)
Decreases brain activity so slows down responses
What is a stimulant (nicotine)
Increase brain activity and speeds up reactions
What are painkillers (morphine)
Decrease feeling of pain by blocking nerve Impulses
What are hallucinogens (LSD)
Distort what is seen and heard by altering nerve pathways
What problems do smoking cause?
Contains carbon monoxide - combines with haemoglobin in red blood cells so blood carries less oxygen
Contains carcinogens like tar which cause cancer
Contains nicotine which makes it addictive
Short term effects of alcohol
Slows reactions
Blurred vision
Lower inhibitions
Long term effects of alcohol
Poisonous so kills liver cells - cirrhosis which means liver can’t clean blood
Brain damage
What are pathogens
Microorganisms that cause disease
How are pathogens spread
Water - cholera Food - salmonella Air - influenza Contact - athletes foot Body fluids - HIV Animal Vectors - malaria and dysentery
What physical barriers stop pathogens
Skins - clots quickly when cut
Respiratory system - lined with mucus and cilia
What chemical barriers stop pathogens
Eyes - tears contain lysozyme
Stomach - hydrochloric acid
What are antiseptics
Used outside of the body to stop disease spreading
What are antibiotics
Either antibacterial or antifungal and inside the body
What is the source of energy for most organisms
Sun
What happens at each trophic level
Energy is lost through feaces respiration movement
What does a pyramid of biomass show
Weight
What is a parasite
Live in/on a host and takes what they need without giving anything back
Examples of parasites
Fleas
Head lice
Tapeworms
Mistletoe
What are nitrogen fixing bacteria in legumes
Live in root nodules and turns nitrogen into nitrates for the plant
What are chemosynthetic bacteria in deep sea vents
Live inside giant worms or molluscs and turns seawater into chemicals for food
Why is the population increasing rapidly
Modern medicine and farming methods
How does the increasing population affect the environment
Non-renewable energy resources being used up
More waste
More phosphates, nitrates and sulfur dioxide
