Cattell used factor analysis of the structure and relationship between diff types of abklity tests. Found fluid intelligence (gf) - the ability to perform well on nonverbal tasks, which do not require previous knowledge but instead is a performance sans cultural elements. 1987

Q

What is a better predictor of acsdemic performance?

A

A meta-analysis by Stumm et al (2011) found that although fluid intelligence is a very good predictor of academic performance, conscientiousness and intellectual engagement is even greater. Model only accounted for a quarter of the variation though, suggesting other factors are also at play.

Q

What is the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and g?

A

Linda Gottfredson’s research suggests that general intelligence may be identified as the fundamental cause of social inequalities (health, education, income) but also of SES itself. (1997, 1998, 2004)

Q

Can SES influence an individual’s intelligence?

A

General intelligence (g) remain stabne from an early age, and SES is unlikely to influence this as populations’ g in highly regulated political systems (communism) is normally distributed. (Firkowska et al, 1978)
