Intelligence Flashcards
What is Fluid Intelligence?
Cattell used factor analysis of the structure and relationship between diff types of abklity tests. Found fluid intelligence (gf) - the ability to perform well on nonverbal tasks, which do not require previous knowledge but instead is a performance sans cultural elements. 1987
What is crystallized intelligence?
Cattell theory. Crystallized intelligence (gc) - the ability to do well on verbal tasks which are substantiall influenced by previous knowledge. 1987
What is gc and gf depndent ont?
Gf is dependent on efficient functioning of the central nervous system, whereas gc is dependent on experience and education within a culture. Cattell 1987
Why is gf and gc beenficial?
Measures of gf and gc is beneficial when estimating a person’s learning potential and their acquired knowledge
What is a better predictor of acsdemic performance?
A meta-analysis by Stumm et al (2011) found that although fluid intelligence is a very good predictor of academic performance, conscientiousness and intellectual engagement is even greater. Model only accounted for a quarter of the variation though, suggesting other factors are also at play.
What is the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and g?
Linda Gottfredson’s research suggests that general intelligence may be identified as the fundamental cause of social inequalities (health, education, income) but also of SES itself. (1997, 1998, 2004)
Can SES influence an individual’s intelligence?
General intelligence (g) remain stabne from an early age, and SES is unlikely to influence this as populations’ g in highly regulated political systems (communism) is normally distributed. (Firkowska et al, 1978)
