EI: Perceiving Emotion
Identify emotions on the basis of perceptual cues.
Eg. Noticing a frown on friends face when you mention the name of someone –> jealously
EI: Facilitating thought with emotion
Harness emotional information to enhance thinking
Eg. Changing a comment to a friend to avoid a rocky outcome
EI: Understanding Emotion
Comprehend emotional information about relationships, transitions from one emotion to another, and verbal information about emotions.
Eg. Understanding a friend is jealous bc of your past relationship with someone
EI: Manage Emotions
Ability to manage emotions and emotional relationships
Eg. Take deep breaths bc you realise you are becoming annoyed
x4 problems of intellectual functioning
- Genetic abnormalities ( Downs Syndrome, Fragile X, Autism)
- Problems during pregnancy (alcohol, drugs, malnutration, maternal infection HIV)
- Problems at birth (prematurity, low birth weight)
- Problems after birth (poisons, physical trauma, childhood diseases)
1st Intelligence Test
- Binet-Simon test
- test many normal children at each stage
- compare individuals score to normal score
- specified what level of performance should be expected of the average child at any given age
- Binet didnt think intelligence was a fixed quantity and could be increased by education

General Intelligence (g)
- Spearman
- a single underlying factor which accounts for intercorrelation of peoples abilities on various types of tests
Fluid Intelligence
ability to solve novel problems, deal with novel situations (cattell & horn)
- peaks early adulthood
- effeced by drugs and alcohol
Crystallised intelligence
Use previous, learning and experience to deal with future, similar situations
-can continute to rise with age

Robert Sternberg Intelligences (name and describe)
Analytic (ability to learn to write clearly, do mathematics, understand literature - critical for academic performance)
Practical ((knowing how to do things like fix a car, sew on a button, sometimes relies on on implicit memories, learned responses and skills that guide our actions without being aware of them - street smarts
Creative (ability to formulate novel solutions to problems - relates to fluid intelligence)
