Q

What did Piaget believe about Children’s thinking?

A

He believed that 4 year olds cannot use abstract logical thinking, and that infants use egocentric thinking. And that only until the age of 7 can the child think logically.

Q

Q

What is the Sensorimotor stage?

A

The stage where children think by interacting with the world around them through their eyes, hears, hands and mouth. And that a baby only remembers and thinks about the world at 18 months old.

16
Q

What is Formal Operational Stage?

A

The stage where abstract logical thinking takes place allowing adolescents to reason through symbols that do not occur in the real world. Allowing them to think through complicated ideas without a concrete image.

17
Q

What is a Schema?

A

Category of knowledge as well as the process of acquiring knowledge.

18
Q

How do children develop through Schemas?

A

A child develops concepts about the world around them, making them in a state of equilibrium. New situations where new information is present, upsets the schemas, leaving the child in disequilibrium. This information is then accommodated, when the original scheme is altered or a new one comes in place, allowing the child back into equilibrium.

19
Q

What does Piaget believe about conservation?

A

Children can only start to conserve at the operational stage. By the age of seven, they can understand that quantity stays the same, even if its appearance stays the same

20
Q

What is egocentrism?

A

Is the young child’s inability to see a situation from a different person’s point of view. They are absorbed in their own world and that speech is used to externalise their thinking.

21
Q

criticisms of Piaget:

A
  • Based his study on a small number of children.
  • There is more fluidity to the age rages he gives, that he overestimates and underestimates cognitive ability of children.
-Cognitive development is not part of the maturation process but rather depending on the child’s environment and quality of education.
22
Q

What is Language Acquisition Device?

A

The preprograming of children acquire language and evolves naturally: the unfolding of biological potential.

23
Q

Why does Chomsky believe in a LAD?

A

Because he believes that children could not have learnt language through imitation alone, because grammar and the syntax of adults are irregular. Chomsky believes that babies do need to experience other people using language, but they do not need to be trained to speak.
