Integumentary system structures work together to provide the following functions within the body:
- Protection from injury, fluid loss, and microorganisms
- Temperature regulation
- Fluid balance (excretion)
- Sensation
Human skin is made up of these two layers:
- Dermis (deeper)
2. Epidermis (outer layer)
Epidermis is composed of four to five layers (depending on location):
- Stratum Corneum (outermost)
- Stratum Lucidum (palms and soles)
- Stratum Granulosum
- Stratum Spinosum
- Stratum Basale (deepest)
Horny layer of skin and is the outermost layer of the epidermis
Stratum Corneum
Deepest layer of the epidermis and is made of basal cells
Stratum Basale
Dermis (deeper layer right under the epidermis) is made up of two strata:
- Stratum Papillare
2. Stratum Reticulare
A dermis layer that is a thin superficial layer interlocked with the epidermis
Stratum Papillare
