17
Q

sweat gland

A

skin gland that secretes a fluid substance for evaporative cooling; also called sudoriferous gland

18
Q

apocrine sweat gland

A

usually associated with hair follicles, continuously secrete a fatty sweat into the gland tubule.

19
Q

eccrine sweat gland

A

the most numerous, distributed across nearly the entire body surface area, and responsible for the highest volume of sweat excretion

20
Q

ceruminous sweat gland

A

modified apocrine sweat glands that underlie the superficial epithelial lining of the external ear canal

21
Q

hair follicle

A

tube like depression in the skin in which a hair develops

22
Q

hair root

A

The part of a hair that is embedded in the hair follicle

23
Q

hair shaft

A

the part of your hair that can be seen above your scalp; made up of keratin

24
Q

arrector pili

A

smooth muscle in the skin associated with a hair follicle

25
Q

basal cell carcinoma

A

form of skin cancer that begins in the epidermis and rarely metastasizes but has the capacity to invade local tissues

26
Q

squamous cell carcinoma

A

cancer that occurs in the outermost part of the epidermis (skin surface) or the surface of certain portions of the body (areas of the head and neck or genitalia) known as squamous cells

27
Q

melanoma

A

deadly form of skin cancer that begins in the melanocytes, pigment cells present in the epidermis

28
Q

fibroblast

A

a cell in connective tissue which produces collagen and other fibers

29
Q

rule of nines

A

estimates the size of a burn

30
Q

rule of nine - head

A

9%

31
Q

rule of nine - arm (individual)

A

9%

32
Q

rule of nine - abdomen

A

18%

33
Q

rule of nine - back

A

34
Q

rule of nine - leg (individual)

A

18%

35
Q

rule of nine - genitalia

A

1%

36
Q

hyperthermia

A

abnormally high body temperature

37
Q

hypothermia

A

abnormally low body temperature

38
Q

when tiny muscles in our skin’s hair follicles, called arrector pili muscles, pull hair upright

A

How are goose bumps formed?

39
Q

How is acne formed?

A

when hair follicles under the skin become clogged

40
Q

What is the relation between the structure of skin and the formation of fingerprints?

A

The top layer of the skin is the epidermis, which has protrusions on the surface called papillary ridges (fingerprint)

41
Q

What are the warning signs for melanoma?

A

Unusual mole requirements:
A - asymmetrical
B - borders (w/notches, indentations)
C - color (uneven)
D - diameter ( >6mm)
E - elevation (raised above skin)

42
Q

What is the wound healing process?

A
  1. inflammatory response: redness, swelling, heat, pain
  2. blood will clot and scab
  3. white blood cells will fight infection
  4. fibroblasts pull edges of wound together and cause scar tissue
  5. basal layer of epidermis produces cells at higher rate than normal rate
