Integumentary System Basics Flashcards
cells that produce melanin-
melaninocytes
pigment that gives color to skin
melanin
This produces sweat to aid in cooling the body. there are two types errcine, and aporcine
THINK SUNFLOWER
sudoriferous (sweat) glands
This produces sebum to keep skin and hair soft, and prevent bacteria from growing on the skin.
sebaceous (oil) glands
oily substance secreted by sebaceous glands
sebum
eccrine glands
Sweat glands found all over the body with openings on the skin’s surface through pores; not attached to hair follicles, secretions do not produce an offensive odor.
Apocrine glands
Sweat glands in the pubic and underarm areas that secrete thicker sweat, that produce odor when come in contact with bacteria on the skin
holocrine gland
Exocrine glands whose secretions are made up of disintegrated cells. Ex. sebaceous glands of the skin its product of secretion (sebum) is released with remnants of dead cells.
keratin
hard protein material found in the epidermis, hair, and nails
keratinized
an epithelium containing large amounts of keratin is said to be keratinized. Normally the stratum corneum is relatively dry, which makes the surface unsuitable for the growth of many microorganisms.
