Lowest part of a hair strand; the thickened, club-shaped structure that forms the lower part of the hair root.
nail matrix
the part of the nail beneath the body and root from which the nail is produced
lunula
The half-moon-shaped, whitish area at the base of a nail
Nail body (nail plate)
The visible nail area from the nail root to free edge. Made of layers. No nerves or blood vessels can be found here.
nail fold (cuticle)
dead skin that is attached directly to the nail plate
free edge of nail
the portion of the nail that grows out away from the body
root of nail
the part that is embedded in the skin and adheres to an epithelial nail bed
