Integumentary System Flashcards
Stratum basale
Single layer of low columnar cells
Cells in stratum basale
Keratinocytes and melanocytes
Stratum spinosum
Several layers of flattened keratinocytes, cells attached by desmosomes
Langerhans cells
Macrophages present in both stratum spinosum and stratum granulosum
Stratum granulosum
Two to five layers of cells with granules.
Stratum lucidum
Thin translucent zone seen only in thick skin
Stratum Corneum
25-30 layers of dead keratinized cells making a waterproof protective outer layer.
Dermal papillae
Responsible for fingerprints
Merorocrine sweat glands
Produce watery perspiration to cool the body.
Apocrine sweat glands
Occur in groin, axilla and areola. Sweat glands that’s respond to stress and sexual stimulation.
Squamous cell carcinoma
Arises from the stratum spinosum
Hypodermis
Deepest region also called, superficial fascia
Meissners corpuscle
Superficial nerve sensitive to touch
Pacinian corpuscle
Inferior nerve sensitive to touch.
Merkel cells
Present at epidermal-dermal junction, function as touch receptors.
Layers of Epidermis (Superficial to Deeper) [CLGSB]
Corneum Lucidum Granulosum Spinosum Basale
Layers of Epidermis: Stratum Granulosum
Keratohyaline and lamellated granules accumulate in the cells of the layer
Layer of epidermis: Stratum Lucidum
Present only in thick skin. Appears as thin transparent band superficial to the s.granulosum
Layer of epidermis: Stratum Corneum
Outermost layer of keratinized cells. “Horny” cells. Accounts for cell thickness.
Eccrine sweat glands
Found on palms, soles of the feet, and forehead.
Seborrhea (cradle cap) in infants caused by
Overactive sebaceous glands.
The epidermis is made up of
Stratified squamous epithelium
