The outer epithelial
Epidermis
Outer most layer of epidermis, consisting layers of flat keratinized cells
Stratum cornrum
Outermost layer of skin. Cells continually shed and replaced by deeper layers
Keratin
Aka stratum germinativum. The deepest layer of epidermis composed of dividing stem cells
Stratum basale
Maintains and repairs tissues upon cell division
Stem cells
Produce melanin, an insoluble dark pigmentation
Melanocytes
Aka a mole. Caused by the growth of clustered melanocytes
Nevus
Connective tissue layer deep into the epidermis containing blood, lymphatic vessels, and nerves
Dermis
Aka oil glands. Cutaneous glands that secrete sebum
Sebaceous gland
Oil matter of the skin and hair, prevent excessive water evaporation and inhibits certain bacteria growth
Sebum
Caused from poor hygiene; excess oils accumulated in the sebaceous glands duct
Blackheads
Skin disease resulting in seborrhea, blackheads, pimples and scarring
Acne
Scaly red skin
Seborrhea
Aka furuncle. Infection of hair follicle from bacteria. Accumulation of pus and dead tissue
Boil
Aka a boil.
