Integumentary System Flashcards

genetic term for an agent (usually a hormone) that stimulates development of male characteristics. Also regulate the production of sebum.
ductule
very small duct
homeostasis
state in which the regulatory mechanisms of the body maintain an internal environment within tolerable levels, despite changes in the external environment.
outer layer of the skin
epidermis
sublayers of outer skin layer
stratum corneum, basal layer
strata
sublayers of epidermis
stratum corneum
outer layer of epidermis. composed of dead, flat, keratinized cells
basal layer
deep layer of epidermis. composed of living cells. contains melanocytes that produce melanin.
melanocytes
specialized cells that produce pigment melanin. contained in basal layer of epidermis.
melanin
pigment that helps protect against UV rays
second layer of skin
dermis (aka corium)
dermis
layer of skin just deep to epidermis. contains lymph, capillaries, nerve endings, hair, sebaceous (oil) glands, and sudoriferous (sweat) glands.
third layer of skin
subcutaneous (AKA hypodermis). connects dermis to underlying structures. composed of loose connective tissue and fat that is interlaced w/ blood vessels.
name the accessory organs of the skin
glands (sudoriferous and sebaceous), hair, nails
describe the structure of a hair follicle
hair shaft (visible portion), root (embedded in dermis), papilla is a loop of capillaries at the base of the root that is surrounded by a layer of epidermis that eventually becomes the hair shaft.
papilla
loop of capillaries at the base of a hair follicle
adip/o
fat (adiposis- abnormal condition of fat)
lip/o
fat (lipcele- hernia containing fat)
steat/o
fat (steatitis- inflammation of fatty tissue)
cutae/o
skin (subcutaneous- pertaining to beneath the skin)
dermat/o
skin (dermatoplasty- surgical repair of the skin)
derm/o
skin (hypodermic- pertaining to under the skin)
hidr/o
