Integumentary System Flashcards
Through trauma to a bone
TRAUMATIC
Through a pathology/disease
PATHOLOGIC
At a location of an implant on the bone
PERIPROSTHETIC
No visible damage to skin at injury site
CLOSED (Stable or Simple)
Visible damage to the skin, with a possibility of fragment of bone protruding out of the injury site
OPEN (Compound)
Occurs when the broken bone fragments are misaligned,
DISPLACED
Runs parallel to the length of the bone
Linear fracture
The bone is broken but the pieces remain in their normal alignment
NON-DISPLACED
Separation of bone fragment from the rest of the bone
Avulsion fracture
Results from twisting one part of the bone
Spiral fracture
Incomplete fracture resulting from the overuse of bone
Stress/hairline fracture
Collapse of bone, common in spongy bone, due to weakening usually caused by osteoporosis
Compression fracture
Fracture that transverse only part of the bone
Incomplete
Fracture that completely separates the bone into at least 2 fragments
Complete
Bone breaks into multiple fragments
Continued
One side of the bone breaks, the other side only bends
GREENSTICK FRACTURES
The epiphysis separates from the diaphysis within the epiphyseal plate
EPIPHYSEAL FRACTURES
- Done when osteoblasts ADD calcium to the bone
BONE DEPOSITION
- Happens when the osteoclasts take away calcium from the bone
BONE REASBORPTION
- Maintains blood Ca levels
PARATHYROID HORMONE
- Increases blood Ca+ levels
CALCITRIOL
- The function is to lower the blood Ca+ levels by inhibiting osteoclast activity
CALCITONIN
- Also defined as swelling or tenderness of one or more joints
ARTHRITIS
- Gradual degeneration of the articular cartilage
OSTEOARTHRITIS
