Integumentary system Flashcards
What is the integumentary system composed of?
Skin, hair, oil, sweat glands, nails and sensory receptors.
There are 2 main parts of the skin. what are they?
Epidermis and dermis
What is the epidermis composed of?
epithelial tissue
What is the dermis composed of?
dense irregular connective tissue.
The epidermis is composed of keratinised stratified squamous epithelium. It contains 4 main principle types of cells. What are they?
Keratinocytes
Melanocytes
Intraepidermal macrophages
Tactile epithelial cells.
Keratinocytes?
90% of the epidermal cells are arranged in 4 or 5 layers and produce a protein called keratin.
Melanocytes?
8% of the cells and produce a pigment called melanin.
intraepidermal macrophages?
(langerhan cells) participate in immune responses.
Tactile epithelial cells?
detect touch senstations.
The epidermis has 4 layers. What are they?
stratum basale
stratum spinosum
stratum granulosum
stratum corneum
stratum basale?
deepest layer
stratum spinosum?
provides stength and flexibility
stratum granulosum?
Keratinocytes undergo apoptosis here (genetic programmed cell death)
stratum corneum?
most superficial layer
The palms and soles (thick skin) have 5 layers. What is it?
stratum lucidum which is only found in thick skin and is located between the granulosum and corneum.
