Integumentary System Flashcards
What cells are in the epidermis?
Langerhans, Merkel cells, melanocytes, keratinocytes
What is the purpose of Langerhan cells?
Specialized dendritic cells of skin, present antigens to T cells for adaptive immune response
What are Merkel cells?
Sensory cells
What composes the connective tissue matrix?
Collagen, elastin, reticulin
What do fibroblasts do?
Produces connective tissue, secretes collagen proteins
What type of hypersensitivity reaction is uticaria?
Type I
What type of hypersensitivity reaction is allergic contact dermatitis?
Type IV
What type of hypersensitivity reaction is atopic dermatitis?
Type I
What characterizes psoriasis?
Increased epithelial turnover, lack of allowing cells to mature and undergo keratinization which results in thickening and plaques
What cytokines are produced in excess in psoriasis?
TNF-a, IL-17, IL-23–all result in rapid growth
What causes psoriasis?
Unknown antigen
What occurs in inflammatory acne vulgaris?
Follicular wall rupture in closed comedone, sebum expelled into dermis and results in inflammation
What are comedones?
Clogged hair follicles in the skin (can be open=blackhead or closed=whitehead)
Herpes zoster becomes dormant and infects which neurons?
Sensory (trigeminal and dorsal root ganglia)
What are the main types of bacterial skin infections?
Impetigo, cellulitis, folliculitis
What is the cause of non-bullous impetigo?
Either S. Aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes
What is the cause of bullous impetigo?
S. Aureus
What are the two types of nonmelanoma skin cancers?
Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma
Which nonmelanoma skin cancer is more likely to metastasize?
Squamous cell carcinoma
Which nonmelanoma skin cancer is the most common?
Basal cell carcinoma
What is a decubitus ulcer/injury?
Pressure injury
Where do keratinocytes divide?
Stratum basale of the epidermis
What are the five layers of the epidermis?
Stratus corneum, stratus lucidum, stratus granulosum, stratus spinosum, stratum basale
