integumentary system Flashcards
what is skin?
the largest organ OF the body
thickness of skin
0.5 in thin skin
4.0 in thick skin
What is skin composed of?
epidermis and dermis
What tissue is the skin made of?
areolar CT and dense irregular tissue
accessory skin structures
suderiferous glands, sebaceous glands, hair/hair follicles, nails
Stratas in the epidermis
Stratum corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, basale
Stratum Basale
single layer, contains keratinocytes (cuboidal), melanocytes (contains melanin), and merkel cells (connects to nerve endings
Keratinocytes
these cells are highly mitotic meaning that they constantly replicate
melanocytes
contains granules that contain melanin and these cells protect the body from UV radiation and mutation that could occur in transcription
merkel cells
merkel dics=touch receptors
Stratum spinosum
several layers that are connected by dessmosomes (anchoring junctions), tonofilaments, epidermal dendritic cells
desmosomes
these cells reduce stress placed on cells/tssues so no separation
tonofilaments
these act as itnermediate filaments in the body, and resist the tension placed on the skin
epidermal dendritic cells
these cells act as macrophages to engulf/digest pathogens (not in epidermis)
stratum granulosum
s3 to 5 layers, composed of two granules(lamellated and keratohyaline granules)
