Epidermis

Stratum corneum
Outermost layer
Stratum lucidum
“Clear” layer below the stratum corneum of thick skin only.
Stratum granulosum
Thin granular layer above stratum spinosum
Stratum spinosum
Spinous (prickly) layer above stratum basale
Stratum germinativum/basale
Bottom of epidermis (base)
Dermis
Second deepest lay of skin after following the epidermis
Papillary layer
“Bumpy” layer. Supplies blood and sensory neurons
Dermal papillae
Papillae= small cone. Swirls produce fingerprints and are the bumps between the epidermis and dermis.
Reticular layer
“little net” of collagen fibers. Contains receptors that pick up deep pressure and pain.
Hypodermis
hypo= below
Subcutaneous (cutaneous) layer
Dermal blood supply and contain adipose
Sebaceous gland
Oil glands, usually associated with hair follicles
Arrector pili muscle
“Goose bumps” muscle, contracts in order to make hair stand up straight.
Sweat gland
Exocrine glands that secrete sweat (look like white rope with knots).
