ductule
very small duct
homeostasis
state of equilibrium of the internal environment of the body despite changes in the external environment

forming a complex substance by the union of simpler compounds or elements
Skin
-2 layers: Epidermis & Dermis
-protects underlying structures from injury
-provides sensory information to the brain
-nerve fibers beneath the skin’s surface register sensations of temperature, pain, and pressure
-protects the body against ultraviolet rays
-regulates body temperature
-prevents dehydration
-reservoir for food and water
-synthesizes vitamin D
Epidermis
-outer layer of the skin
-thickest on palms and soles of feet
-sublayers called strata
Stratum Corneum
-dead, flat cells that lack blood supply and sensory receptors
Basal Layer
-living cells where new cells are formed
-rise to surface
-become keratinized
-sloughed off
Keratin
prevents body fluids from evaporating and moisture from entering the body
