Integumentary System Flashcards
What makes up the integumentary system?
Skin (primary organ) and its accessory organs (hair, nail, and glands
What are the structures of the skin
Epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis)
What is the epidermis
Outer layer, thin cellular membrane
What is the dermis
Next layer, dense fibrous, connective tissue
What is subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis)
Thick, fat-containing tissue. Lipocytes are predominant in subcutaneous layer
What are the layers in the epidermis
Stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum basale
Describe stratum basale
-Deepest layer of cells
-Called stratum germinativum
-Combination of Merkel cells, melanocytes, keratinocytes, and stem cells that divide repeatedly
Describe stratum spinosum
-8 to 10 cell layers held together by desmosomes
-during cell preparation, cells shrink and look spiny
Describe stratum granulosum
-3 to 5 cells of flat dying cells
-has lamellar granules that release lipid that repels water
Describe stratum lucidum
-seen in thick skin on palms and soles of feet
-3 to 5 layers of clear, flat, dead cells
-has precursor of keratin
Stratum corneum
-25 to 30 layers of flat dead cells filled with keratin and surrounded by lipids
-constantly sheds
-barrier to light, heat, water, chemicals, and bacteria
