Dermis Flashcards
Describe the dermis
-true skin
-has collagen, elastic fibers, fibroblasts, macrophages and fat cells
-has hair follicles, glands, nerves, and blood vessels
-has 2 layers: papillary (dermal papilla) and reticular layer
Describe papillary layer
-composed of dermal papillae that project into the epidermis
-forms unique pattern that gives you fingerprints
Describe reticular layer
-has dense, interlacing white collagen fibers and elastic fibers to make skin tough yet stretchable
Describe subcutaneous layer (hypodermis)
-also called superficial fascia
-located deep to the dermis; forms connection between skin and other structures
-not part of skin
-thick, fat-containing tissue. Lipocytes are predominant in subcutaneous layer
What are the functions of the subcutaneous layer (hypodermis)
-has adipose and some fibrous tissue
-fatty tissue protects inner organs and maintains body temperature
-blood vessels and nerves are present
