Integumentary System Flashcards
What are the two major skin layers?
1) The dermis- inner layer of the skin made of connective tissue
2) Epidermis- outer/thinner layer which contains living and dead cells
What are the organs of the integumentary system?
Skin and its accessory structures such as nails, hair and glands. As well, blood vessels, nerves and muscles.
Where can you find epithelium?
Epithelium can be found in the hair, nails, and epidermis of the skin
What does the dermis contain?
The dermis made up of connective tissue
Define Dermatology
Medical profession specifies in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders in the integumentary system
True or False- The integumentary system is second largest system?
False- The integumentary system is the largest since the skin is considered the largest organ by mass
True or False- The 4 basic tissue types of the system is the epithelium, the dermis containing CT, muscle and nerves
True
What are three ways the epidermis differs from the dermis?
1) The dermis comprises a thin network of vessels aka capillaries vs the epidermis which has no blood vessels
2) The epidermis obtains essential nutrients & oxygen by diffusion from the dermis vs the dermis which obtains nutrients and oxygen through the capillaries
3) The dermis consists of nerves vs the epidermis which has no nerves present
What are three ways the skin acts as self-defense mechanism?
1) External barrier to bacteria- helps in prevention of infections & protects internal organs
2) Regulation of body temperature
3) Produces oil so bacteria can’t produce as easily
True or false- The skin helps in synthesis of vitamin D?
True
True or False- Skin plays an important role in the reservoir of blood?
True
Why is our skin thickest on the heels?
Helps as a protective barrier- helps in the response to pressure and friction
Define homeostasis
The body maintaining certain amount of set conditions in order to survive
What are 5 major functions of the skin?
1) Body temperature regulation
2) Protection
3) Cutaneous sensations
4) Excretion and absorption
5) Synthesis of vitamin D
Where can you find Keratin and what is the role?
Keratin can be found in the skin and protects underlying tissue such as microbes, abrasions or heat
True or false- The colour of a patient’s skin can indicate a physical condition?
True- Observing the skin is a great way to determine if something is going on with your patient. For example, if their skin or nails have a blueish or grey appearance it could mean circulatory problems
What is subcutaneous also known as?
Hypodermis- underneath the dermis
