what is callus?
hard, thickened area of skin
what is cellulitis?
inflammation of soft tissue due to an infection
what are comedones?
small flesh-coloured acne papules; similar to blackheads
what is crust?
a clump of dried skin exudates
what is erythema?
redness of the skin
what is furuncoluosis?
localized infection affecting the hair follicles
what is hyperkeratosis?
thickening of the cornfield layer of the epidermis
what is hyperpigmentation?
increased melanin (pigment) in the skin, response to skin irritation, darkening/thickening of skin in dogs
what is keratolytic?
an agent that removes the cornified layer of the epidermis
what is keratoplastic?
an agent that softens the epidermis
what is the mucocutaneous junction?
area where the skin is continuous with the mucous membranes
what is a papule?
small, solid elevation of the skin, usually red, may develop into a pustule
what does pruritis mean?
itchy
what is a pustule?
bacterial infection of the skin, presence of pustules
what does scale mean?
dandruff
what does seborrhea mean?
excessive scale production
what does sicca- mean?
dry scales
what does oleosa- mean?
greasy scales
what is an ulcer?
an erosion in the skin that extends deeper than the epidermis
what is a vesicle?
a blister within the skin filled with clear fluid
what are wheals?
red or white elevations of the skin “hives”
what is superficial pyoderma?
involve the epidermis, occasionally the dermis and hair follicles
