Integrumental System Flashcards
Name three things skin does for the body?
Keeps organs in place, protects from direct UV light, stores fat (also contains hairs for thermoregulation, provides the sensation of touch and protects from pathogens)
What is special about the surface of the skin ?
The first layer of skin consists of dead cells to provide a physical barrier
(Not a flash card but try labelling the skin and the different layers) here’s the different parts of the skin
a hair, hair follicle, sweat gland, sweat pore, sweat duct, erector muscle, sebaceous glands, sensory nerve endings, subcutaneous fat, capillaries
List what happens to the skin when hot
Sweat glands become active, muscle is relaxed so hair lays on the skins surface, blood vessels dilate and heat is lost by evaporation
What happens to the skin when it’s cold?
Sweating is REDUCED, muscles contract causing the hairs to stand and blood vessels constrict
What is a long term response to living in a cold environment
Thickening of the layer of fat under the skin
What is the correct term for dilated blood vessels
Vaso-dilect
What is the correct term for constricting blood vessels
Vaso-constrict
What happens when the skin detects a temperature change (which gland gets sent an impulse)
The hypothalamus
Name two heat receptors
The skin and the blood vessels
List three heat loss mechanisms used to maintain body temperature
- shivering
- vasoconstriction
- increased metabolic rate
List three heat gain mechanisms used to maintain body temperature
- vasodilation
- sweating
- decreased metabolic rate
