Integrated histology and pathophysiology: Hepatic and biliary Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the blood supply provided by the portal vein.

A
  • 75% of blood supply to the liver
  • carries poorly-oxygenated venous blood

6
Q

What are hepatic cords? Where are the hepatic sinusoids in relation to the hepatic cords?

A

rows of hepatocytes going from portal triads to the central vein forming sort of a brick wall. Hepatic sinusoids are between the hepatic cords.

Q

What are the three zones of a liver acinus?

A

Zone 1:peritubular

  • near the terminal portal vein gets the highest concentration of nutrients and toxins
  • Most O2 rich
  • last to die if circulation is impaired

Zone 2:
remains viable during ischemia along with zone 1 because of the close proximity to the portal triad

Zone3: Centrilobular

  • nearest the central vein
  • lowest concentration of nutrients/toxins
  • protected from toxins but vulnerable to anoxia

Q

What 3 types of cells are associated with hepatic sinusoids?

16
Q

Are the endothelial cells of hepatic sinusoids fenestrated or not?

A

They are fenestrated.

17
Q

Where are bile canaliculi found?

A

Small enlargements in the extracellular space between two adjacent hepatoctes. Sealed by zonula occludens.

18
Q

How do the bile canaliculi join the bile ducts in the portal triad?

A

via short squamous CANALS OF HERING (bile ductules)

19
Q

In cirrhosis, which cells are responsible for producing lots of Collagen Type I that forms the scar tissue?

A

Ito Cells

20
Q

What are the layers of the gallbladder?

A
  1. Mucosa
  2. Muscularis externa
  3. Serosa

[NOTE}: No muscularis mucosae and submucosa!!!!!!!
