What are the rapid acting medications?
Humalog (Lispro), NovoLog (Aspart), and Glulisine
What is the onset of Rapid Acting Insulin?
Approximately 15 minutes
What is the peak of Rapid Acting Insulin?
30 Minutes to 1 hour
What is the duration of Rapid Acting Insulin?
Less than 5 hours
What is the indications for rapid acting insulin?
Used for rapid reduction of glucose level, to treat postprandial hyperglycemia, or to prevent nocturnal hypoglycemia
What are your short acting agents? (Short acting are also called regular insulin)
Regular (Humulin R & Novolin R)
What is the onset of Short Acting Insulin?
30 to 60 minutes
What is the peak of short acting insulin?
2 to 3 hours
What is the duration of short acting insulin?
4 to 6 hours
What are the indications of short acting insulin?
Usually given 15 minutes before a meal, it is used to cover mealtime spikes in blood sugar levels and may be taken alone or in combination with longer-acting insulin.
What is the intermediate Acting Insulin?
NPH (humulin N & Humulin L)
How do we administer NPH?
Inject air into NPH, then regular insulin second. Regular insulin is withdrawn first by NPH.
What is the onset of intermediate acting insulin?
1 to 1.5 hours
What is the peak of intermediate acting insulin?
4 to 12 hours
What is the duration of intermediate acting insulin?
Less than 24 hours
