What are the types of insulin and when should they be given?
Rapid acting: just before meals
Short acting: 20-30 minutes before meals
Mixed (contains rapid/short acting): with meals as above
Intermediate: once or twice daily, 30 minutes before breakfast or at bed time
Long acting: once daily, same time each day, either first thing in the morning or before bed
Ultra long acting: once daily or 2-3 x per week, same time each day
If BSL is too high, what should you check before increasing insulin dose?
Problems with adherence / doses / times being given, rotation of sites, proper storage, any intercurrent illness
After treating hypoglycaemia, by how much should you reduce the insulin dose?
10-20%
