Insulin Flashcards
insulin production is normally stimulated by
rise in glucose
metabolic syndrome
abdominal obesity
serum glucose>110
serum triglycerides>150
serum HDL < 40/50 m/f
what does insulin do?
lowers blood glucose by transporting glucose from bloodstream to cells of other tissues
- promotes glycogen synthesis and fatty acid synthesis in liver
- inhibits glycogenolysis, hepatic ketogenesis and gluconeogenesis
one unit of insulin -
the amount required to reduce blood glucose conecentration in fasting rabbits to 45mg/dL
rapid acting
short acting
intermediate
long acting
rapid acting - < .25 hours - good for hyperkalemia 3-5 hrs
short acting - < .5 hours , lasts 4-6 hours
intermediate - < 2 hour onset and lasts 12-18 hours
long acting - 2-3 hours and lasts 24 hours
how does hypokalemia occur after insulin therapy
potassium entry into cell from serum is stimulated
