insulating the home Flashcards
What is in common with all insulation
•All insulation contains trapped air.
Air is a good insulator.
• All insulation reduces heat loss by conduction.
What’s different about cavity wall
Cavity wall also reduces heat loss by convection.
How does double glazing work
• The gap between the 2 layers of glass contains trapped air.
•Air is a good insulator so this reduces heat transfer by conduction.
How does Draught excluders work
•The gap around the edges of the doors can let heat escape.
•Draught excluders contain material with lots of pockets of trapped air that stop heat loss by conduction
How does loft insulation (fibre glass) work
•The insulation (fibre glass) contains trapped air
• Air is a good insulator so this reduces heat transfer by conduction.
how does Cavity wall insulation work
•The gap between the inside and outside layers of brick in a house is filled with foam.
•The foam is a good insulator reducing heat loss by conduction
• The foam also stops air moving in the gap to reduce heat loss by convection.
How does floor insulation work
•Placing carpets on the floor reduces heat loss by conduction.
•You can also place polystyrene tiles on the floor - this contains trapped air which is a good insulator.
why does trapped air stop heat loss by conduction
because warm air cannot rise and cold air cannot fall
Benefits of insulating homes
• Energy bills are reduced
• Carbon dioxide emissions are reduced- causes global warming
