Q

Explain the Doctrine of Lapse.

A

In India, every Hindu had the right to adopt a male heir in the absence of a natural heir. However, after Lord Dalhousie’s arrival to India, he declared that only the British had the right to approve or defuse such an adoption by a dependent ruler. In case of refusal, the territory without the male heir would be annexed by the British.
