Conquest of Mysore and war against Marathas Flashcards
Explain the Anglo-Mysore wars.
The ruler of Mysore, Haider Ali did not allow trade with the British as he had formed an alliance with the French. His son, Tipu Sultan also did not allow trade with the British. This enmity lead to four Anglo-Mysore wars between the years 1766=1799. The British captured Srirangapatnam and Tipu Sultan was martyred in the war. This was one of the strongest oppositions faced by the British in India.
Explain the war against the Marathas.
The British considered the Marathas is the biggest obstruction in their ambitions. The British wanted to weaken their Power at the earliest opportunity which came very soon after the death of Peshwa Mandhav Rao in 1772. A total of three Anglo-Maratha wars took place before the British gained control over their kingdom. The first one took place when the British supported claims of Raghunath against Peshwa Mandhav Rao-2, the infant son of the diseased Peshwa. Here, they were forced to recognize Peshwa Mandhav Rao 2 as the Peshwa. However, after the death of Nana Pandhavis, who lead the first Anglo-Maratha war, the Marathas started fighting each other for power. The British took advantage of this situation and defeated the Marathas after two more wars against them.
