Instruments and knot tying Flashcards
Name and describe the main categories of instruments we use..
- Towel clamps - sharp and painful but limited interuption of blood supply
- Cutting instruments - scalpel (blade and holder) scissors
- Forceps - tissue, dressing, artery - holding tissue/ dressings/ haemostasis
- Needle holders - suturing
- Needles - cutting and round, straight and curved
Draw and describe the function of instrument anatomy.
- Holding end - may have rachets
- Mid piece - may have join
- Functional end - tip, jaw, blade
Which of these scissors is a mayo/ metzenbaum type? What is the function of each?
- Mentzenbaum - Cutting suture material - less sharp
- Mayo - To cut skin/ tissue ONLY - sharp
In what situation would you want to use a “blunt” set of scissors?
When would sharp be necessary?
Blunt scissors - for haemostasis - crushes bv’s
Sharp - for healing
What is the difference between tissue and dressing forceps?
What are their different functions?
Tissue - have a rat toothed functional end - for holding tissue (beware of trauma)
Dressing - have blunt ends - for holding dressings and hollow organs
What is the difference between Adson and Treaves forceps?
- Adson - small, precise functional end, large holding end - higher pressure
- Treaves - functional end and holding edge are same width - even spread of pressure
What is the function of artery forceps?
Haemostasis
Name and describe the different types of needle holders.
- Gillies - no rachet (relies upon surgeon strength)
- Olson-Hagar - Rachet, has a cutting edge
- May-Hagar - No cutting edge
Perform a one handed knot tie
Check technique
Perform a two handed knot tie.
Check Technique
What is the difference between a granny knot and a square knot?
Square knot is a none slip knot, a granny knot slips
What are the advantages and disadvantages of increased number of throws on a surgical knot?
Increased throws increases security but also more foreign material left in the animal
