Instruments Flashcards
An embalming instrument that is used for blunt dissection and in raising vessels.
Aneurysm hook
An embalming instrument used for blunt dissection and in raising vessels that have an eye in the hook portion of the instrument for placing ligatures around the vessels.
Aneurysm needle
Multipurpose instrument (size can vary) used in the embalming process (e.g., as a drainage instrument).
Angular spring forceps
Locking forceps, sometimes called clamps, that are used to grasp and hold objects or tissue. Used to compress an artery.
Arterial fixation forceps
Tube used to inject embalming solution into the blood vascular system.
Arterial tubes
Aspirating device that suction gases, fluids, and semisolids from the body cavities and hollow viscera.
Autopsy aspirator
A small slender straight or curved surgical knife with a sharp or blunt point.
Bistoury knife
Device that attaches to bottle of cavity fluid. Consists of a syringe, trocar and a trocar tip.
Cavity fluid injector
A thin plastic tube, with holes at each end, which is placed in the cavity to remove fluid.
Drainage tube
Forceps called clamps that are used to compress blood vessels or other tubular structures to obstruct the flow of blood or fluids.
Hemostats
A long thin trocar used for supplemental hypodermic embalming.
Hypovalve trocar
A hollow needle used with a syringe to inject substances into the body.
Hypodermic needles
Embalming instrument used to aspirate the throat by means of the nostrils.
Nasal aspirator
Used to hold a suturing needle for closing wounds during suturing. Also called a needle driver.
Needle holder
Mechanical device used to impel specially designed metal pins into bone.
Needle injector
Instrument used to guide vein rules into vessels.
Groove director
An instrument used to separate the edges of a surgical incision or wound, or to hold back underlying organs and tissues so that body parts under the incision may be assessed.
Retractors
Hand-operated shearing tools.
Scissors
Instrument that create is used to grasp, retract, or stabilize tissue. Also called tweezers.
Spring forceps
Instrument used to secure suction lines.
Towel clamps
Sharply pointed surgical instrument used in cavity embalming to aspirate the cavities and inject cavity fluid. May also be used for supplemental hypodermic embalming.
Trocar
Plastic, threaded screw like device for sealing punctures and small round trocar openings.
Trocar button applicator
Instrument inserted in the severed end of vein without rupturing the lining or any portion of the wall. It expands the vein for the embalming tube.
Vein expander
Two-piece embalming instrument consisting of a handle and a blade used to make incisions and excisions.
Scalpel
Round bodied needles used for suturing incisions.
